"Pleasants County, named for James Pleasants, governor of Virginia (1822–24), is one of the smallest counties in West Virginia. It has 134.6 square miles and 2020 population of 7,653. Pleasants County was created in 1851 from portions of Wood, Ritchie, and Tyler counties. After reaching its peak of 9,345 residents in 1900, during the heart of the oil and gas boom, the county’s population has remained, for the most part, relatively steady..."
